Bechamel is a classic, mild white sauce that serves as the background for a variety of flavorful crepe filling recipes. In a hurry for a crepe? Whip up this bechamel sauce recipe and add cooked chicken, turkey or your favorite vegetables. Spoon the mixture inside a warm crepe, add a handful of Swiss cheese, and you've just made a quick and easy dinner!
Bechamel sauce is incredibly versatile. We use a variation of this sauce in several recipes, such as our Chicken Crepes with Mushrooms and Asparagus or our Vegetarian Crepe with Mushrooms, Tomato and Bechamel Sauce. The secret to a great bechamel sauce is to stir, stir, and STIR! Ingredients: - 6 tablespoons of butter
- 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 3 cups of whole milk
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
Melt butter in a medium saucepan on a medium-low burner. Once melted, whisk in flour. Keep whisking until mixture is thoroughly combined. Cook, stirring continuously, until mixture turns into thick paste (or roux), golden in color, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, heat milk in a separate sauce pan until hot. Add to sauce mixture gradually, continuing to stir, until completely incorporated. Raise heat and bring sauce to a boil. Still stirring. Cook for an additional 8-10 minutes until smooth and thick. Remove from heat, stir in salt and nutmeg. Yield: About 2 ½ cups sauce
